Unit 2 - X Marks the Spot

In this unit, students see themselves as mapmakers, helpers, and community leaders. They explore what maps are and how symbols and keys help people find their way, then identify important places in their own town.

As students work toward the culminating performance task, they design and build a map that will help newcomer families feel welcome and find their way around the community. Students plan their layout, use map symbols and a key, revise based on peer feedback, and prepare their finished map for delivery to the Family Welcome Center. 2
